Clérigo Herido / Wounded Loggerhead Kingbird

El 3 de junio recibí una llamada de mi mamá indicandome que en el lugar donde ella se encontraba alguien llevó un ave herida y querían saber qué hacer. Al describirla, ella me decía que el ave tenía plumas negras, pico negro, una pluma amarilla y que era un juvenil. De momento no supe qué decirle, pues aunque un ave negra sugería al Chango (Quiscalus niger), esa pluma amarilla no era parte de esa ave. Lo escuché quejarse y vocalizar, lo cual me indicaba que no era tan joven. Me dirigí al lugar y para mi sorpresa era un adulto de Clérigo (Tyrannus caudifasciatus). Eso explicaba la pluma amarilla en la cabeza. Le revisé las alas, buscando huesos rotos y nada. Sólo tenía un pequeño golpe cerca del pico, producto probablemente al haber chocado con un auto, lo encontraron en el medio de la carretera. Dentro de la casa hicimos una "prueba de vuelo" y todo bien. Al salir lo tomé en mis manos y abriéndolas, permanecía en mis manos. Aproveché y tomé algunas fotos.
Esta especie es la primera ves que la observo en esa área (Magueyes, Barceloneta,PR), si mi memoria no falla, es una grata sorpresa saber que están ahí. Principalmente es observada en zonas elevadas ó en el interior de la isla, sin embargo no es del todo raro observar esta especie en áreas bajas y costa, especialmente en Vieques y en el oeste. Unos días antes observé otro, un poco más al norte de este lugar.
Fué especial tener en mis manos a nuestra ave endémica número 18. Espero con ansias el día en que finalmente sea nombrada oficialmente.

On 3 June I received a call from my mom telling me that in the place where she was someone brought a wounded bird and wanted to know what to do. To describe it, she told me that the bird had black feathers, black beak, a yellow feather and was a juvenile. At the moment did not know what to say, for even a black bird suggested me a Greater Antillean Grackle (Quiscalus niger), the yellow feather was not part of that bird. I heard him moaning and vocalizing, which told me it was not so young. I went to the site and to my surprise was an adult Loggerhead Kingbird (Tyrannus caudifasciatus). That explained the yellow feathers on the head. I checked the wings, looking for broken bones and all. It only had a small bump near the peak, due probably have collided with a car, they found him in the middle of the road. Inside the house we did a "test flight" and all good. When I took it out on my hands and opening them, he remained in my hands. I took advantage and took some (more) photos.

For this species is the first time that I see in that area (Magueyes, Barceloneta, PR), if my memory serves, is a welcome surprise that they are there. Is observed mainly in highlands or in the interior of the island, however is not entirely unusual to see this species in low areas and coast, especially in Vieques and in the west. A few days before I saw another, a little north of here.

It was special to get my hands to our endemic bird number 18. I look forward to the day is finally officially named.

I always love orchids and bromeliads. Now I decide to start to put some on the Birds Backyard. My next posts will be about that new thing on the yard.

Day 2 There's no day one!? Not really. The boat arrive so late that we have just time to bring all the food and clothes eat and sleep. That's why there's no day 1 at all.
Good morning. Because of the arrives of the big group we have things to do. My job this morning is to prepare a burner for the trash that can't be recycle. I wake up at 0530 an is cold up here around 60 F. So the day start cold burn for a while and I'm ready to band and trap Common and Roseate Terns.

Great Gull Island 2010

Hi to all. For second year I'll travel to Great Gull Island a paradise nesting site for Common and Roseate Terns. I'll try to give you every day a resume of what's happened on the island.

Hola a todos nuevamente. Sigo ocupado en unos asuntos que estaban pendientes y que espero pronto poder terminar.
Hace unas semanas, tuvimos la grata visita del conocido Nigel Marven a nuestra isla. Tuve el privilegio de compartir con él durante su visita el día 27 de marzo. Dirigidos por nuestro amigo José Colón (alias el Gallito Cialeño), el día comenzó bien temprano en el Bosque de Rio Abajo donde Marven tuvo la dicha de ver parte de la población "salvaje" de la Cotorra Puertorriqueña (Amazona vittata) que están cerca del aviario.
Salimos del frío bosque hacia el Caño Tiburones en búsqueda del Gallito Amarillo (Porzana flaviventer) que habita allí. Tan evasivo como siempre, nuestro objetivo principal no apareció.

Sí pudimos observar sorpresivamente expuestos, a varios Martinetitos (Ixobrychus exilis) incluyendo a uno que estaba desayunando pescado fresco. Hago notar que Marven quedó fascinado con el lugar. Por sus comentarios conoce parte de la historia del Caño Tiburones.

Inmediatamente el vecino Bosque Cambalache fué nuestra tercera parada de la mañana. Nuestras aves endénicas serían las protagonistas y no nos defraudaron. Marven disfrutó del Pájaro Bobo Mayor (Coccyzus vieilloti), Comeñame (Loxigilla portoricensis), Reinita Mariposera (Dendroica adelaidae), el siempre bien escondido Bienteveo (Vireo latimeri), Juí (Myiarchus antillarum) y claro el San Pedrito (Todus mexicanus). Ya a la salida y haciendo un esfuerzo por encontrar algo más, el propio Marven logró notar que el por qué un San Pedrito no nos hacía caso es por que le faltaba un ojo. Son mansos, pero ni tanto.

Luego en los próximos dias tenían previsto visitar Maricao, Cabo Rojo, Guánica entre otros y según me cuentan les fué excelente.

Quisiera darle las gracias a José Colón por hacernos la invitación, compartir y enseñarnos cómo se hace este tipo de turismo de observación de aves.
De Marven puedo decir que es una persona sencilla y sin ningún tipo de ego, a pesar de ser reconocido mundialmente. Estoy seguro que le gustó y que de Puerto Rico se llevó una muy buena impresión.

Hello everyone again. I keep busy with matters that were pending and that I hope to finish soon.
A few weeks ago, we had the pleasant visit of the famous Nigel Marven to our island. I had the privilege of sharing with him during his visit on March 27. Led by our friend José Colón (aka the Cialeño Cock ), the day started very early in the Rio Abajo Forest where Marven was fortunate to see part of the "wild" population of the Puerto Rican Parrot (Amazona vittata) that are near the aviary.
We went out the cold forest in search of the Yellow-breasted Crake (Porzana flaviventer) that lives in Caño Tiburones. As elusive as ever, our main objective was not there.

We'll be able to see exposed several Least Bittern (Ixobrychus exilis). One of them with fresh fish breakfast. I note that Marven became fascinated with the place. Because of his comments, I notice he knows part of the history of Caño Tiburones too.

Immediately neighboring Cambalache Forest was our third stop of the morning. Our endemic birds would be the objective and we are not disappointed. Marven enjoyed the endemics Puerto Rican Lizzard Cuckoo (Coccyzus vieilloti), Puerto Rican Bulfinch (Loxigilla portoricensis), Adelaide's Warbler (Dendroica adelaidae), the always well hidden Puerto Rican Vireo (Vireo latimeri), Puerto Rican Flycatcher (Myiarchus antillarum), and of course the San Pedrito (Todus mexicanus). At the exit and making an effort to find something else, Marven was able to note that a Puerto Rican Toddy was missing an eye.

In the next few days they scheduled to visit Maricao, Cabo Rojo, Guánica, among others and told me they have been excellent.

I would like to thank José Colón for the invitation to make, share and teach us how to do this type of birding tourism.
About Marven, a simple person and without any ego, despite being recognized globally. I am sure he enjoy the visit. Puerto Rico gave a very good impression for sure.

Mi Ave de Jardín Favorita / My Favorite Backyard Bird

Saludos a todos. Analizando la pregunta de Layanee en Ledge and Gardens, y que leí en el blog Greenbow Gardens de Lisa, escogí cual es mi ave de jardín favorita. Mi escogida es la Reina Mora / Puerto Rican Spindalis / Spindalis portoricensis. Un ave hermosa y muy común en los jardínes en Puerto Rico. Quizás no sea la más valiente o inteligente, pero adorna con sus colores mi Birds Backyard.

Fotografiando aves por el oeste / Photographing birds in the west

Anoche tuve que ir al hospital por un dolor de oído que me estaba matando y llegué a mi casa a las dos de la mañana. Mi viaje para fotografiar aves estaba frustrado... naaaaa!! No para mí. Aunque me encontraba indeciso, mi bella esposa me alentó a ir y aunque las nubes me decían que no, hice el viaje. El dia en el oeste de Puerto Rico estaba maravilloso. Llegué al muelle de Los Franceses en el barrio El Seco de Mayagüez y estaba lleno de aves. Allí habían Sandwich Terns, Forster's Terns, Ring-billed Gull, Laughing Gull, Common Terns y mi "LIFER": el Black-headed Gull. Llegó justo al frente donde me había sentado a fotografiar cuanta ave se metiera frente al lente. Definitivamente, lograr ver un ave nueva, siento más ganas de seguir, descubrir más. Es adictivo. ¡Disfrútenla!

Last night I had to go to hospital for an ear pain that was killing me and I arrived at my home at two o'clock. My trip to photograph birds was frustrated ... naaaaa! Not for me. While I was indecisive, my beautiful wife encouraged me to go and although the clouds were telling me no, I made the trip. The day in western Puerto Rico was wonderful. I arrived at El Muelle de los Franceses in El Seco, Mayaguez and was full of birds. There had Sandwich Terns, Forster's Terns, Ring-billed Gull, Laughing Gull, Common Terns and my "LIFER": Black-headed Gull (Larus ridibundus). He arrived just in front where I had been sitting to photographing all the birds were put in front of the lens. Definitely, seen a new bird and I am most eager to continue to discover more. It is addictive. Enjoy!

Hoy salí de mi trabajo más temprano que de costumbre y jamás pensé que terminaría fotografiando algún ave hoy. Resulta que me llama Sergio, y me indica que en la desembocadura del Rio Grande de Manatí habían dos gaviotas, una de ellas no muy usual. Pues como vivo muy cerca, me detuve en el lugar y ustedes verán pues lo que pude obtener. Como muchas veces Sergio nuevamente me llama cuando él ve algún ave rara por el area. De hecho el es quien me ha enseñado todo lo que sé de aves. Hoy utilizé una técnica que no uso mucho, pero hoy fué efectiva para estas fotos y que precisamente Sergio me enseñó. Luego les hablaré de ello.

Today I left my job earlier than usual and never thought I would end by photographing a bird today. It turns out that Sergio called me and tells me that at the mouth of the Rio Grande de Manati there were two seagulls, one of them not very usual. Dia de pajarear / Birding day

Hoy era el día programado para la "bandada" para observar aves de la Sociedad Ornitológica Puertorriqueña de la cual soy miembro y pertenezco a la directiva.
Con pronóstico de lluvia en el panorama, nos adentramos en la Finca Román en San Sebastián, PR, para una mañana de observación de aves. Un riachuelo junto a una gran cantidad de vacas que pastaban en el húmedo pasto al amanecer dan la bienvenida. Eran las 7:45am cuando comenzamos. Había un caballo que además de mansa, sintió curiosidad por nuestras cámaras e insistía en colocarse en medio.
Disfrutamos de la belleza y frescura de las montañas junto con las aves. Hablamos de plantas, árboles y por supuesto, aves. Logramos divisar alrededor de 26 especies de aves, entre ellas endémicas, nativas y migratorias. Estas son dos fotos tomadas durante el recorrido. No fué un dia muy productivo en cuanto a cantidad de fotos.

Today was the day scheduled for the "flock" to bird watch on the Puerto Rican Ornithological Society of which I am a member and belong to the directive.
With rain forecast in the picture, we are entering the Finca Roman in San Sebastian, PR, for a morning of birding. A creek next to a large number of cows that graze on the wet grass at dawn they welcome. It was 7:45 a.m. when we started. There's a horse that in addition to gentle, felt curious about our cameras and insisted placed in the middle of the "shot".
We enjoy the beauty and freshness of the mountains along with the birds. We talk about plants, trees and of course, birds. We managed to see some 26 species of birds, including endemic, native and migratory. These are two photos taken during the tour. Was not a very productive day in terms of the number of photos.

La limpieza continúa / The cleanup continues.

Ayer el trabajo de limpieza continuó. El turno era de un montón de cocos acumulados que definitivamente tenían que ser sacados. Sobre 300 cocos ademas de las hojas de palma y hojarasca acumulada se removió.

Yesterday, the cleanup work continued. The shift was a pile of coconuts accumulated that definitely had to be removed. Over 300 coconuts in addition to the palm leaves and leaf litter accumulated was removed.

Mucho mejor. Ahora que todo está limpio, puedo continuar con el acondicionamiento o arreglo del terreno. Estoy en espera de un camión de tierra para utilizarla en los lugares donde se necesite además de usarla para las plantas que estaré sembrando.

¡Un nuevo comienzo! / A new beginning!

Ahora que tengo mi propia casa, me he puesto la meta de hacer de mi patio trasero un lugar o habitat especial para las aves. Todos deben saber que mi pasión por las aves es extremo. No ha sido fácil. El patio trasero estuvo abandonado y sin limpieza adecuada por años. Yo corté árboles secos, recogí hojas, basura y otras cosas que no pertenecían al lugar. Mi meta más grande es lograr la certificación de la National Wildlife Federation como un Wildlife Backyard Habitat. Ya he comenzado. En la próxima nota empezaré a mostrarles y describirles cómo era el lugar al comenzar la transformación. Siempre escribiré mis notas tanto en inglés como en español.

Now that I have my own house, I have the goal of making my backyard a special place or habitat for birds. Everyone should know that my passion for birds is extreme. It has not been easy. The backyard was left without proper cleaning for years. I cut dead trees, picked leaves, trash and other things that did not belong to the place. My biggest goal is to achieve certification from the National Wildlife Federation as a Wildlife Backyard Habitat. I have already begun. In the next note I will start to show and describe how it was the place to begin the transformation. I'll write my notes in english and spanish.
